Low-gain Antenna

There are two low-gain antennae on the NEAR spacecraft that will be used for back-up for the 1.5-meter high-gain antenna. If the spacecraft is positioned in such a way that the 1.5-meter antenna is not pointing at the Earth, then one of the low-gain antennae can down link the information, but at a slower rate.
