The NEAR Laser Rangefinder (NLR) is a direct-detection single-pulse rangefinder. It uses a diode-pumped, neodymium-doped yttrium-activated garnet (Nd:YAG) laser transmitter, supplied by McDonnell Douglas, which emists light at a wavelength of 1.064 microns (1064 nanometers). The laser delivers a 15 millijoule (mJ) pulse of 12 nanosecond (ns) duration. The beam has a maximum divergence of 300 mrad (0.017°). The leading edge of the reflected pulse is detected, with a range resolution measured in test better than 0.5 m. Range accuracy is near 6 m. Pulse repetition rates are selectable among one per 8 second (1/8 Hz), one per second (1 Hz), 2 Hz, and 8 Hz (for a 2-second burst). An internal optic fiber is used for inflight calibration.
