The Mysterious Face of Eros NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of the southern part of Eros' eastern hemisphere on October 28, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 194 kilometers (120 miles). The whole view is about 8.9 kilometers (5.6 miles) from top to bottom. The very oblique lighting creates the illusion of a face seen in profile.
