A Knob on the Saddle

During a global mapping sequence on November 29, 2000, NEAR Shoemaker photographed the boundary between the northeastern and southwestern depressions within Eros' saddle. The northeastern depression, at left, is mostly in shadow. The southwestern depression, at bottom, shows its characteristically bouldered surface. On the boundary between the depressions in the lower part of the picture is a large, rounded knob. This picture was taken from an altitude of 192 kilometers (119 miles), and shows a region 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles) across.
