Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous

NEAR image of the day for 2001 Jan 16

Mottled Eros

NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of Eros on January 8, 2001, from an orbital altitude of 34 kilometers (21 miles). The Sun, high overhead, subdues shadows and brings out variations in the brightness of surface materials. This illumination reveals several ring-shaped bright patches, about 60 meters (200 feet) across, on the inside walls of small craters. The whole scene is about 1.4 kilometers (0.9 miles) across.
