Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous

NEAR image of the day for 2001 Jan 22

All That's Left

NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of highly textured Eros terrain on January 12, 2001, from an orbital altitude of 37 kilometers (23 miles). At a small scale of less than 100 meters (330 feet), the landscape is dominated by striations that trend from upper left to lower right. Just below the center of the frame, there appears to be a crescent-shaped fragment of a degraded crater. To the right, where one might expect a continuation of the crater, there is instead only bouldery regolith. The whole scene is about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) across.
