Signs of Regolith

NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of the terminator region on Eros - the imaginary line dividing day from night - on January 24, 2001, from an orbital altitude of 36 kilometers (22 miles). The extreme lighting accentuates surface topography. At these small scales, the effects of a blanketing layer of regolith are clearly visible. Among the signs of regolith are many boulders strewn across the surface, infilling of low spots, and the softened edges of small craters. The whole scene is about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) across.
