Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous

NEAR image of the day for 2000 April 14

Managing the Data Harvest

In the two months that the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft has been in orbit around Eros, its harvest of images has been managed using a variety of data-processing and browsing tools.

Shown here is part of an image sheet that includes "thumbnail" versions of nine images taken on March 20, 2000. A full image sheet includes 54 thumbnails, providing a compact overview of each day's data. These images were taken as part of a color mapping sequence covering high northern latitudes. The identifying file name above each image incorporates information on the time of image acquisition, the color filter through which it was taken, and the route by which the image was sent to the spacecraft's solid-state recorder and then processed on the ground.
