Mapping Eros

The camera on NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of a section on Eros' southern hemisphere on August 30, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 97 kilometers (60 miles). One of the mission objectives at this altitude is to cover the southern hemisphere taking images that look straight down onto the surface, as in this image. For cartography - that is, making maps - this kind of geometry is favored because it results in minimal distortion of surface features. The scene shown in this image is 4.1 kilometers (2.5 miles) across.
