Inside the Paw, Part II

Imaging by the NEAR Shoemaker camera produced this view of bright material inside the large Eros crater nicknamed "the paw" The image was taken September 3, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 83 kilometers (52 miles). The large crater is 5.3 kilometers (3.3 miles) in diameter and has several smaller craters superimposed on the southern rim, which gives it the appearance of a giant animal footprint. The bright spots are believed to be areas of regolith uncovered after darker surface material slid down the crater wall. The whole scene shown here is 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) across.
