Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous

NEAR image of the day for 2000 Sep 13

Changes

NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of Eros' southern hemisphere during an optical-navigation imaging sequence on September 8, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 100 kilometers (62 miles). The region shows effects from the many processes that have modified much of the asteroid's surface. Resurfacing is evident from the lack of any large craters at right; groove formation has sculpted the surface, especially at lower left; and bright regolith has been exposed on the walls of the two craters in the lower middle part of the image. The whole scene is about 4.4 kilometers (2.7 miles) across.
