The Horizon from Low Orbit

NEAR Shoemaker caught this spectacular view of Eros' horizon just after local sunrise on August 21, 2000, while the spacecraft was orbiting 50 kilometers (31 miles) above the asteroid. The large dark region at the lower left is the shadowy inside of a crater. The bright spots in the distance (upper right) are the sunlit faces of boulders.
