Back on the High Road With a successful low-altitude flyover under its belt, NEAR Shoemaker has returned to a high-altitude orbit for a month to map the color properties of Eros' southern hemisphere. This will be the last high-altitude segment of the mission. From early December until the end of mission in February 2001, the spacecraft will be engaged in its final stretch of very detailed, high resolution mapping. This image, taken October 28, 2000, looks down the length of the asteroid's southern hemisphere from an orbital altitude of 181 kilometers (112 miles).
