The Southern Hemisphere from High Orbit

NEAR Shoemaker is now mapping Eros' southern hemisphere from high orbit. This image mosaic, taken October 29, 2000, shows the southern part of the hemisphere from an orbital altitude of 196 kilometers (122 miles). The whole view is about 23 kilometers (14 miles) across and shows most of the asteroid's length. "Synoptic" coverage like this, showing a broad area at an instant, provides very valuable "context" for lower-altitude, high-resolution pictures.
