Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous

NEAR image of the day for 2000 Nov 13

Looking Southwest Over the Saddle

This image of Eros' saddle region, obtained November 6, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 197 kilometers (122 miles), highlights key features in this part of the asteroid. NEAR Shoemaker's camera is pointing southwest. The narrow linear feature in the foreground (lower right) is part of a very long, complex structure that nearly wraps around the asteroid. Here the structure is a trough, but in other places, it is a ridge. Beyond that lies the saddle's interior, consisting of two major overlapping depressions - the larger depression occupying the central part of the picture, and the southwestward extension at the upper right.
