Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous

NEAR image of the day for 2000 Dec 11

Dimpled Eros

NEAR Shoemaker photographed the region southeast of the large crater Psyche on December 8, 2000, from 179 kilometers (111 miles) above Eros. This end of the asteroid features a large pair of craters that form a prominent "dimple" -- an easy-to-spot landmark that provides a clear reference point on the surface. The picture covers a region about 6.6 kilometers (4.1 miles) across.
