Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous

NEAR image of the day for 2001 Jan 05

Sunset at High Resolution

NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of Eros on December 29, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 33 kilometers (21 miles). Shown here is the asteroid's "terminator," the imaginary line dividing the day side from the nightside. It is here that the longest shadows and most accentuated small-scale detail are observed on the Eros' surface. The whole scene is about 1.1 kilometers (0.7 miles) across.
