Borderline This picture of Eros, taken by NEAR Shoemaker on January 13, 2001, from an orbital altitude of 36 kilometers (22 miles), shows the boundary region of two geologic provinces on the asteroid. At the bottom of the frame is the edge of the heavily cratered southern mid-latitudes. The top of the frame includes the southern margin of the saddle-shaped feature Himeros, whose bouldery, less-cratered surface is evidence of relatively recent geologic activity. The whole scene is about 1.4 kilometers (0.9 miles) across.
