NEAR Image and Link Policy
- Using NEAR Images
- NEAR images are generally available for informational or educational purposes, so long as their use does not convey NASA's or The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory's implicit or explicit endorsement of any goods or services you might be offering. There is no fee required for their use, but please credit NASA/Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (or NASA/JHUAPL) in your materials.
NEAR is a NASA mission and adheres to the space agency's guidelines for image use and reproduction. Visit Reproduction Guidelines for Use of NASA Images and Emblems for more information.
- Getting High-Resolution Images
- The images on the NEAR Web site reflect the true resolution of NEAR Shoemaker's digital camera. If you scroll down to the bottom of each "Image of the Day" page on the NEAR Web site, the "TIFF image" link connects you to the highest-resolution file available. Mosaics, larger images compiled from multiple frames, offer the best resolution.
- Can I link to the NEAR site from my Web pages?
- Sure, provided the link is strictly for information and does not convey implicit or explicit endorsement of any goods or services you might be offering by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory or NASA. You may use images from the Gallery, but neither the NEAR logo, NASA insignia, logotype or seal.
- Can I use a screen shot of NEAR pages as an example in my class? How about in a guide to various Web sites?
- The rules for screen shots are the same as for images: their use must be for informational or educational purposes and must not convey implicit or explicit endorsement of any goods or services you might be offering. If your use meets those criteria, go ahead. You do NOT need to e-mail for explicit permission.
- Can I use a NEAR screen shot or images in an advertisement?
- See above, then please check with Helen Worth (240) 228-5113 of the APL Public Affairs Office to see how NEAR material can be used in ads.
- Can I use either the NEAR or NASA logos as a graphic link from my page either to NEAR or NASA home pages?
- No. There are strict guidelines on the use of NASA symbols such as insignia and logos. Because personal homepages are not the property of NASA, it cannot permit its emblems to be used on them. However, an image that is in the public domain, such as a NEAR spacecraft image, can be used on your Web site as long as a recognizable engineer or other NASA or Applied Physics Laboratory employee does NOT appear in it.
